Units of the National Parks System

2016 marks the centennial of the National Park Service (NPS). I hope that these maps will spark interest to revisit an old favorite or discover a new unit whether you are a frequent visitor to National Park units or have never visited one.

The file with the boundaries of the NPS units was downloaded from the NPS datastore in order to ensure the most current boundaries. It includes every unit owned or administered by the National Park Service, which includes not only the 59 National Parks in our country, but also the other types of sites seen on the maps such as National Monuments, National Historic Sites, and National Battlefields.

The overall map highlights all of the units of the NPS in the southern states of the United States. The map depicts the perimeters of all units unless the sites are under 10,000 acres in size, in which case a dot with the appropriate color is placed on the map so that the unit can still be seen at the scale of the map.

The NPS units in the individual state maps also have units with less than 10,000 acres in size depicted as dots so that their locations can be easily seen on the maps. All the other units show the actual boundaries of the units. The individual state maps also include major roads and cities so the viewer has a better understanding of where the units are located within each state. In these maps the surrounding states are masked, remaining partially visible, so that units that cross state boundaries can still be seen in their entirety.

Have fun exploring!
