Welmon Sharlhorne
Welmon Sharlhorne was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1952. He spent his childhood in the fields and bayous of Houma, Louisiana, one hour south of New Orleans. After twenty-two years of incarceration for nonviolent crimes, Welmon became recognized as one of the South’s leading self-taught artists. Since being released from Angola prison, he lives between New Orleans and Houma, making his distinctive pen and ink drawings that continue to be sought by collectors and museums here and abroad.

I met this man tonight in a little jazz bar in New Orleans, dancing and smiling and loving life. Such a beautiful soul! What a privilege to meet him.
My acupuncturist {a pretty white girl} told me about you at my last appointment and I had to look you up. I like your work. I draw with ink and paint with coffee and tea.
